There was a shift in my work when I began to fully embrace the color pallet of the foils. I affectionately call it my “coat of many colors” phase. I could not help but use almost every foil color I had in almost every piece. The nature of foil is both deep in value, yet light reflective so it never looks the same over the course of a day/night.
Learning more about the pallet and how it interacted with the light enabled me to push fully past my subdued color stage and into a color explosion. At this time I was working strictly with foil on paper or metal. I was continuing to add a clear texture coat under the foil layers to give the works a more painterly effect.
Early in my career I was making a local presence in my community showing work at coffee shops, local art fairs, schools and fundraisers. I had opened a Custom Frame shop and art gallery called Claim to Frame in a better effort to support my art habit and show my work. At this time I took almost as much pride in my artistic framing as my work, and somehow the pieces did not feel complete until they were framed. I like to think I saved myself money by framing my own things, but ultimately my framing tastes got more and more lavish as they become extensions of the pieces themselves. Many of my older works display this part of my journey.
